The Real Estate Developers Association of Hong Kong Delegation visits the headquarters of BYD and experiences a passenger-ride of SkyShuttle

In order to promote a low-carbon and sustainable urban development model and learn about the latest development of green and advanced technology of mass transport systems, a delegation of The Real Estate Developers Association of Hong Kong (“REDA”) paid a visit today (9 May) to the headquarters of BYD Company in Shenzhen to take an experience-ride of the driverless rail transit system, SkyShuttle, and explore the feasibility of its implementation in Hong Kong.

The REDA delegation of 27 people, led by the Chairman of the Association’s Executive Committee Mr. Stewart Leung, first took a ride of the SkyShuttle on the Ping Shan Line which has been operating for more than a year, before visiting BYD headquarters to learn about the recent development of the green transportation system. “The SkyShuttle has outstanding performance in safety, stability and passenger comfort, and is competitive in terms of construction and operation costs. I believe it can meet the needs of urban development for convenient mass transport systems,” said Mr. Leung, after the ride.

Mr. Leung remarked that Kai Tak is a very important new development node in Hong Kong, providing strategic spaces for commercial, tourism and entertainment activities, and residential developments in the planning area.  The provision of efficient and convenient transportation facilities is essential to the further development of the Kai Tak area.  The Policy Address 2023 announced the implementation of smart and green mass transit at Kai Tak and East Kowloon to promote green transport and connect the commercial and residential developments and the tourism, cultural and entertainment facilities within the area. With the continuous growth of the Kai Tak area and the increasing number of people working and living there, there is an urgency to commence the preparatory work immediately. REDA hopes that the Government will consider the various feasible options and formulate the plan and the timetable for implementation of a mass transit system in Kai Tak as soon as possible, in order to support the vibrant growth of the economic and tourism-related activities in Kai Tak, promote a synergistic integration of the existing railway network serving Kowloon East and the future mass transit system in Kai Tak, and optimize the full potential of Kai Tak as the CBD2 of Hong Kong.
